Victory Medal: Asst. Engr, R. Spiers R.N.R.
Robert Spiers was born in Darvel, Ayr, Scotland in 1885. According to online genaeological research, he served in the Scots Guards from 1902-14 but saw no overseas service. In 1914 he was granted a commission as an Assistant Engineer in the Royal Naval Reserve and served in HM Yacht Greta for a brief time (he appears on the Navy Lists as such). However, his commission was cancelled and he subsequently transferred to the Royal Navy (number M10941) in June 1915. Most of his service was in HMS Lord Clive – one of the montiors used to bombard German coastal installations. For his service in 1915, he was awarded the Distinguished Service Medal (DSM LG 12-1-16) and was also Mentioned in Despatches (MiD LG 12-1-16). Robert Spiers passed away at Darvel in 1929.
Medal has some wear and the ring has been replaced.
