British War Medal / Victory Medal: 8437 Pte. Waiting. Conn. Rgs.; Italian War Merit Cross, reverse engraved: 8437 Pte. S. Waiting. C.R.; Canadian Legion / British Empire Service League Medal, reverse engraved: Samuel Waiting – District #3 – Great Lakes Command – 1951-52
Based on research conducted online, Samuel Waiting was born in Barrow-in-Furness, England around 1899. Notes from a family member state that he joined the army underage to help feed his remaining family members (others had perished during a German bombing of Barrow). He was a member of US-based branches of the Canadian Legion after the war and clearly proudly wore his medals (see digital photo). However, we have found no trace of him in any official WWI records. The medals, whilst originals, are all privately engraved. Certainly a mystery that may be unravelled with additional research.
The Legion medal is missing the small jump ring attaching the medal to the suspender.
The WWI medals to William Young – Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders, his son’s father-in-law, are offered by us separately.
