Henry RIchard Yarnold was born in Pimlico, London in 1881. He joined the Royal Marine Light Infantry at London in 1899. Prior to the First World War he served in a number of ships and shore establishments as documented in his service record. During WWI he served in HMS Cornwallis 1914-17 until being transferred to HMS Vanguard in March 1917. He was aboard the Vanguard when the battleship suffered a series of explosions and sunk almost instantly with a loss of 843 of the 845 men aboard - including a contingent of 92 Royal Marines. Yarnold is commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial.
