William Brown was born in Grimsby, Lincolnshire. He joined the British Army in 1903. He disembarked in France with the 1st Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers on 12 September 1914. He was wounded (GSW toe) sometime in September and was in hospital in Paris by the end of the month. He was discharged, his period of service having expired, in 1916. He rejoined the Northumberland Fusiliers, being assigned service number 33680 and served with the regiment until being transferred to the Labour Corps. His service file for his service between 1903 and 1916 survives and is available for consultation online.
