Arthur Hamilton Gordon Campbell was born in Ceylon in 1889. He was the son of George William Robert Campbell, KCMG – a British Colonial Officer who served as the first Inspector General of Police in Ceylon (Sri Lanka) and was also Lieutenant-Governor of Penang 1872-73. There is considerable information about the family online and will make an interesting research project.

Private Arthur Hamilton Gordon Campbell, Ceylon Planters Rifle Corps, entered the Egypt theatre of war on 17 November 1914. With the O.T.C. in Egypt in April 1915 and subsequently appointed a 2nd Lieutenant in the Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders and was eventually promoted to Captain. He was badly wounded, losing an arm during his service (see attached newspaper clippings found in online research). He passed away at Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa in 1961.
