Alexander McNeill was from Dalmuir, Dumbarton County, Scotland. He joined the 1st Battalion Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers at Glasgow in 1911. He first served in the UK and then in India for nearly 2 years in 1913-14. He then proceeded with the battalion to the Dardanelles, landing at Gallipoli. McNeill managed to survive Gallipoli unscathed and proceeded with the battalion to the Western Front. He continued to serve until he suffered severe wounds in April 1918 - GSW to his right arm and thigh. His arm was amputated, and he was subsequently discharged being medically unfit for further service. He was awarded a 1914-15 Trio and the Silver War Badge for his service.
