1914-15 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal. (SE-3730 Pte. J. Mitchell A.V.C)
James Mitchell was born in Redhill, Surrey, UK and had the occupation of groom when he joined the British Army in January 1915. He was initially with the Army Veterinary Corps with the uncommon rank of "Horse Keeper" until being compulsorily transferred to the Royal West Kent Regiment. He was again transferred, this time to the 12th Battalion Rifle Brigade (London Regiment), with whom he was serving when he was severely wounded by a bullet to his forearm. Mitchell was ultimately invalided to England and discharged from the army in 1919.
His WWI service records survive and are available for consultation online.
These medals were found together with the Boer War / WWI group named to Staff Sergeant Mitchell and the two soldiers are presumably related, however, we have not determined the nature of their family connection.
