William Smith was born in Newmachar, near Aberdeen, Scotland. He had 12 years previous service in the Highland Light Infantry (1890-1903), His service in India and South Africa earned him the India Medal with clasp Punjab Frontier, the Queen's South Africa Medal with Wittebergen and Cape Colony clasps and the King's South Africa Medal. He joined the 4th Battalion Gordon Highlanders at Aberdeen in August 1914. Suffered a gunshot wound to the right leg in March 1915 and was invalided home. He was discharged in 1917 being found unfit for further service. Smith passed away in Aberdeen in 1950.
