John Henry Penfound was born in Launceston, Cornwall. He joined the Royal Navy in 1910 and served in HMS Leviathan, Mars and Majestic prior to the First World War. During the war he served in HMS Edgar and Argus. He was awarded his RN LSGC in 1924 whilst serving in HMS Concord.
