Fred Holland was born in Darley Dale, near Rowsley, Derbyshire. He was serving in the 2nd Volunteer Battalion the Derbyshire Regiment when he joined the Royal Engineers at Bakewell in 1893. During his 22 years of service in the Royal Engineers, Holland rose to the rank of Serjeant Instructor. He completed two courses in engine driving in 1894 and 1896 where he was assessed as ‘Superior’ and ‘Very Superior’ respectively. During the Boer War, he served with 45 Company (Fortress), Royal Engineers. Continued to serve during the early years of the First World War (at home) and was finally released at the end of his second period of engagement in 1915. Upon discharge, he was assessed as: ‘Character Exemplary. A thoroughly reliable, trustworthy and resourceful man with a practical knowledge of his work.’ Holland was awarded the LSGC with gratuity in April 1912.
