Thomas Ramsay was born in Stranraer, Scotland. He joined the Seaforth Highlanders at Fort George in 1885. He served in the regiment for 14 years, all home service until going to South Africa in March 1900. During the Boer War he was wounded at Roodeport. He returned home in 1901 and was discharged in 1902.

Wounded on 28/05/1900 at Roodepoort - a farm, since considerably subdivided, in the Orange Free State (Heilbron district; Free State), 35 km north of Lindley. Variant: Rooipoort (Afrikaans spelling as used on the 1: 250,000 map and by the Times), Oliphants Vlei (CR). Marching from Lindley* to Heilbron* on 28 May 1900, Lt-Gen Sir H.E. Colvile's column encountered strong opposition on the farm losing two men killed and 33 wounded. HMG III p.114 (map no.38); Times IV p.247 (map of the Orange Free State in the front pocket).
