John Parnaby was born in Easingwold, North Yorkshire. He joined the 10th (The Prince of Wales's Own) Royal Hussars at York in June 1845. Served 24 years, very nearly 10 of which were abroad viz over 8 years in the East Indies and over a year in the Crimea and Turkey. Conduct was ‘very good’. He was discharged upon reduction of the army.
