Charles Shepherd joined the 10th Royal Hussars in 1891. He completed his period of engagement and transferred to the Army Reserve in 1898. Recalled to service in 1899, he served with the 14th Hussars in South Africa and according to information available online was wounded twice – first in 1900 and again at Muller’s Pass on 24 May 1901. The medal roll indicates that ‘2’ was his local number whilst serving with the 14th Hussars and explains why the KSA is named as it is. His initial is also incorrect on the roll.
