Warwick Pickup was born in Blackburn, Lancashire. He was serving in the 3rd Battalion Loyal North Lancashire Regiment when he attested to the regular army in 1893. He served at home and in Ceylon 1893-99 and then proceeded to South Africa, He suffered an injury to his head and feet (thrown from a horse) which plagued him in later life. Discharged in 1905, Pickup attested again in 1915 but did not see service overseas and was discharged medically unfit due to his injuries from his prior service.
