Born in Deptford, Kent, Patrick Riley was serving with the militia (3rd Battalion East Kent Regiment) when he attested with "The Buffs" at Woolwich in 1897. He served in South Africa attached to the 1st Mounted Infantry.
A Patrick Riley served with the 1st Battalion East Kent Regiment with service number 3/6599 which was very likely the same person. This soldier was awarded a 1914 Trio and served with the Buffs and the Royal Defence Corps.
