Robert McLean was born in Barony, Glasgow around 1867. He had previous service in the 1st Lanark Volunteers when he joined the 6th (Inniskilling) Dragoons at Colchester in 1885, He served with the regiment in South Africa 1887-90 including the Zululand Campaign in 1888. The regiment were present at the following actions: the Battle of Ceza, 2nd June 1888 and the Battle of Hlophekhulu, 2nd July 1888.
McLean transferred to the Army Reserve in 1891 and was discharged from same in 1898, but was recalled soon thereafter. He saw service in South Africa 1899-1902 and also served during the First World War, spending the entirety of that conflict at home.
