James Grattage was born in Burslem, Staffordshire. He joined the 1st (Royal) Dragoons in 1889 and served with that regiment (regimental number 3155) until transferring to the Army Reserve in 1896. Recalled for service in South Africa in 1899, he served with the 6th (Inniskilling) Dragoons in South Africa until he was discharged in 1902.
