James Wylie was born in Shankhill, Belfast around 1872. He attested to the Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers at Omag in 1890. He served over 5 years in India 1892-98 and was among the members of his regiment who served in the Tirah Expeditionary Force 1897-98. He transferred to the Army Reserve in 1898 but was recalled for Boer War service and served in South Africa 1899-1902 for which he was additionally awarded the QSA and KSA.
