James Corey was born in Ardstraw, near Castlederg in County Tyrone, Ireland. He was serving in the Militia (4th Battalion Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers) when he attested to the Regular Army at Omagh in 1895. He served over 4 years in India 1897-1902, earning his India Medal, and then served in South Africa for nearly 2 years 1902-03 for which service he received a Queen's South Africa Medal. He subsequently served 4 more years in Egypt before returning home, serving there between 1908 and 1914. During the First World War he disembarked in France 23 August 1914, still with the 2nd Battalion, and served on the Western Front until being wounded (GSW Shoulder) on 13 September 1914, He convalesced in the UK but returned to the Western Front for a second time in December 1915 and served until August 1917 at which point he was returned to the UK and discharged,. For his service during WWI he was awarded a 1914 Trio. He served a total of 20 years and 102 days with the colours. Corey passed away in London in 1961.
