Joseph Heady was born in Leighton Buzzard, Buckinghamshire. He was serving in the 3rd Battalion Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry when he attested to the regular army at Oxford in March 1893. He served in India 1895-99 and was awarded his IGS with two clasps. Whilst in India, he was tried by court martial and found guilty of ‘stealing money the property of a comrade’ and sentenced to be imprisoned with hard labour for 6 months. He served in South Africa 1899-1901 for which he was awarded a Queen’s South Africa Medal with clasps ‘Johannesburg’, ‘Cape Colony’ and ‘Orange Free State’. He was discharged as medically unift for further military service in 1901. 
Suspension on medal somewhat slack.
