Robert McGlinchey was born in South Leith, Edinburgh. He joined the King's Own Scottish Borderers at Berwick-Upon-Tweed in 1885. He served in Gibraltar, Egypt and East Soudan 1888-90 and in the East Indies 1890-93. He saw further service in South Africa 1900-1901 and was awarded the Queen's South Africa Medal for his service in addition to his Egypt Medal.
