Thomas Ashley was born in Woking, Surrey, England and was living in Ottawa when he attested to the 59th Battalion, CEF in June, 1915. He served with the Royal Scots before emigrating to Canada, seeing service during the Second Boer War and earning the Queen’s and King’s South Africa Medals. He served briefly in France with the 18th Battaion, CEF and was then returned to Canada on medical grounds (heart strain). He continued to serve, joining the Corps of Military Staff Clerks.
