Landing at Boulogne on 18 September 1915, he was with the Battalion during their first tour of duty in the trenches. Saxelby was killed in action 8 October 1915 when the Germans detonated two large mines beneath the trenches occupied by the 28th Battalion at Kemmel. He is buried in Kemmel Chateau Military Cemetery.
