At some point he relocated to Southern Ontario as he joined the Canadian Army Service Force at Windsor, Ontario on 2 April 1940 and was assigned to the Essex Scottish Regiment. He proceeded overseas in July 1940. Present with the regiment on the ill-fated Dieppe Raid on 19 August 1942, Dobson was taken prisoner by the Germans and spent the remainder of the war in POW camps. \u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eAccompanying the medals is a large quantity of original paperwork including Dobson's baptism certificate, Canadian Army discharge certificate, document acknowledging receipt of Dobson's request for a record of his military service for US immigration and old photostats of the foregoing two documents. Additionally there is a quantity of original paperwork of his submission to the War Claims Commission regarding maltreatment whilst a POW, which makes fascinating, if harrowing reading. In the documentation, Dobson describes being shackled at various points, marched between POW camps and other hardships suffered during his time in German custody and his bitterness towards his captors is evident. Among the documents is a handwritten timeline from his capture to liberation in April, 1945.
