He travelled to Canada in 1912 and was married to Joan Graham in Winnipeg in 1913. The couple returned to the UK in 1915 and Fenton was commissioned as a Lieutenant in the 4th Battalion Somerset Light Infantry. He served as an acting Captain attached to the 5th Battalion South Staffordshire Regiment. Bisset died of wounds 16 April 1918 at Number 23 Casualty Clearing Station.
